Microsoft 365 for managing CAD data

Unleashing engineering creativity!

It is not unusual for engineers working with 3D design software to use the Microsoft 365 platform for day-to-day communication. However, managing design data and coordinating design processes can still be a challenge. During the design process, it is crucial that all files for a project can be easily located by designers and even edited independently within a project.

Shared OneDrive provides the ability to share files, and our enhancements ensure that only one designer can edit files at a time. This way, no changes to files are lost. For smaller design companies, Microsoft 365 is a great option and we can help you with that. Whether you are using Solid Edge or SOLIDWORKS design software, we can ensure that your design files are always in ‘Extracted’ (editable) status with only one designer. This way the designer doesn’t have to worry about the location of the files, they can just focus on the engineering part. This saves time and effort and allows the development tasks to be successfully completed by the agreed deadline.

Microsoft 365 has a number of benefits that can help you work more efficiently and collaborate better. Some of the key benefits include:

Premium Microsoft 365 applications. These apps include smart help features such as advanced planning, writing and spoken language suggestions.

1TB of OneDrive cloud storage. Easily manage documents from anywhere, anywhere with AutoSave and easy sharing.

Share a subscription. Everyone can enjoy the benefits of premium Microsoft 365 apps on all their devices (PC, Mac and mobile), 1 TB of OneDrive cloud storage, 60 Skype minutes per month and advanced security features.

Advanced security: ransomware detection and recovery in OneDrive, two-step identification in Personal Vault, and automatic deactivation of viruses and malicious links in Outlook.

Extended technical support: get ongoing technical support via chat or phone for Windows 10 and all subscription apps.

These benefits can help you save time and energy and work more efficiently on everyday tasks. If you don’t already have a Microsoft 365 subscription, you should consider the different options and subscription plans.

Microsoft 365 in focus

The idea behind the product family is to eliminate the need to run a separate, local server infrastructure to share files or send emails. All you need is a laptop/PC and internet access, nothing else. The Microsoft 365 family includes, depending on the subscription, the usual Office desktop software, but you can also use their WEB or even Mobile applications.

We provide a 1 month trial period to use the packages, during which we help you set up the CAD system you are using (Solid Edge, SOLIDWORKS) so that designers can design a project together.

Once the licenses are up to speed, we provide support to get the system up and running quickly and efficiently.

Unleashing engineering creativity!

But how to integrate a CAD system into Microsoft 365?

We often see engineers from design companies working in their own folders on their own computers, and then manually copying the files to a shared drive after they have made their changes so that others can access them.

Copying can lose information due to overwriting, and it is also a waste of time. These tasks can be automated very well.

In today’s world, the internet is fast enough to synchronise files on the local machine to the cloud or from the cloud to the machine. Therefore, we don’t need to buy expensive PLM/PDM systems to support basic engineering and file sharing. OneDrive does it for us. If we already have a Microsoft 365 license, we can designate a shared folder or more where our CAD files are stored and sync them via the cloud to all our design machines or the shop floor.
