Manual numbering of drawings in numbers

Despite the well-known technological development and software aimed to increase efficiency, even today designers number drawings manually…

How long does it take to manually number an installation that consists of hundreds or thousands of parts?

If we assume that creating a drawing number takes 30 seconds on average then for an installation of 1000 parts, a designer spends 30.000 seconds, that is 500 minutes, more than 8 hours with the monotonous task of numbering the drawings!

There are multiple problems with numbering the drawings manually:

  • Managing the drawing numbers takes up a lot of time.
  • When numbering the drawings manually, there is a limited amount of time we can allocate to this task.
  • The risk of making mistakes is high – they can type in wrong or repeated numbers.

What happens if the designer mistypes the drawing number or if an already existing drawing number has to be given back and deleted from the book of drawing numbers? Can the deleted number be issued again, or will there be “gaps” in the book?

Automatic numbering of installations with thousands of parts, within seconds

With the help of our company’s development, XNumbering, an automated numbering add-in for Solid Edge software, numbering the thousands of installation parts is no longer a problem.

The add-in automates the numbering tasks related to drawings created with a design software thus it replaces manual work.

Starting automatic numbering in Solid Edge’s menus or on the web interface

The XNumbering add-in has its own toolkit that integrates into the Solid Edge menus. This way it becomes an integral part of the program, and we can start the necessary actions directly from the software’s usual interface.

At the same time, it is also possible to use the numbering through a web interface.

Storing drawing numbers in a central database

The XNumbering add-in registers the drawing numbers in a database on a Microsoft SQL server. The plug-in generates the next drawing numbers (even in mass) based on the SQL database. After this, it places the numbers into the appropriate metadata of the Solid Edge file(s). The SQL table contains all the data that a traditional book of drawing numbers would, for example English and Hungarian names, etc…

If the data related to the model changes in the Solid Edge software, the data in the database will automatically refresh upon saving the file.
