How to determine the overall dimension

It is common that mechanical engineers are asked to indicate the overall dimensions on the part’s manufacturing drawing or in the part list. In case of 3D modelling, the width, length and height of the given part can be determined manually, but this can be tedious depending on the model and how it is positioned in the space. The 3 main dimensions are usually also displayed in the manufacturing management software, in which case it also matters a lot what we enter as width, height, and length. In case of sheet parts, it is even more important to determine the overall dimension in order to estimate manufacturing costs.

Here is an automatic option to determine the overall dimension:

The XBOM for Solid Edge add-in generates the compiled part list for the construction, including the parts’ overall dimensions if this data is available.

As part of the XBOM for Solid Edge add-in, the overall dimension data is calculated automatically, thus it is included in the part list. In order to determine and see the overall dimension data, we create an own panel on Edge Store where we can set the overall dimension in the required format when necessary. The size data is saved into the Solid Edge file, so it is enough to simply enter this format once, the size data will change automatically in line with the model’s size changes.

Where can we use this add-in?

At Doroti Pack Kft., the overall dimension of each part designed in Solid Edge is automatically imported into the ABAS corporate governance system and is ready to use for ordering or manufacturing.

The following video presents how the add-in works.
